The Center is located in a rural, Appalachian area in Southwestern Virginia. This Central Appalachian area has been described as the “poverty pocket of America”, making the work challenging for those who serve in the region.
In addition to day time hours, we currently provide services to clients in the evenings and on weekends. Graduate students work in the Center and the VT Autism Clinic as a training ground traveling a 50 mile radius to work with clients throughout the New River Valley.
The Director of the SAFE program, Amy Azano, works in very remote areas of Appalachia and has developed trust and confidence with local, isolated communities. It is our goal to bring our services to these communities to both help individuals and families with ASD and to educate the community to better understand the special needs of these families and individuals.
